Garrick Shines as the Pirates Advance to 2-0.
Published on 11.07.21
The Pirates affirmed their number 13 national rank with a definitive 114-93 win
against their familiar opponent, the Worcester Majors.
What Happened -
This rematch from the season opener saw Providence without their previous Player of the Game, Michael Mendes. Nonetheless the Pirates cleaned up their game plan and won in convincing fashion, even leading by 30 at one point in the fourth quarter. The captain of the ship was undoubtedly Tom Garrick Jr. who recorded a dominant 33 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. Seven footer Kevin Briggs also contributed 17 points and seven rebounds. Despite facing double digit deficits multiple times throughout the game, Worcester showed their toughness and fought back every single time before the Pirates were finally able to put them away. The Providence Pirates will look to extend their record to 3-0 next Sunday afternoon at the West Warwick Civic Center against the Bennington Martens.
Turning Point -
This game compared to last was less high-flying and showcased much grittier defense. In their last match up, the Pirates showed a willingness to let leads escape them. In the first half, it appeared that this may be becoming a trend. Providence gained an early double digit lead that they saw quickly disappear as Worcester's bench and fans turned up the energy. Following halftime, the Pirates had put this tendency behind them and held a double digit lead for most of the second half.
