PIRATES SEASON KICKED OFF
WITH THE OPEN TRYOUT
August 21, 2022 - Providence, RI. Providence Pirates kicked off its 2022-23 campaign with a successful open tryout over the weekend. The tryout was hosted at MacColl YMCA on Saturday, August 20, and it lasted just under 4 hours.

Players from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York has attended the tryout. Players went through several stages during the day, starting with the pictures and the measurements. Then, the agility stations was next where players went though series of tests including lane drill, 3/4 court sprint, and long standing jump. Pirates staff carefully recorded the tests as this part of the tryout has always played a role in the selection process.
“We held our open tryout this past Saturday, August 20th at the MacColl YMCA. We had just about thirty players go through a variety of basketball drills and multiple scrimmage games. These activities gave us a great assessment for evaluation. We will invite a select number of players' to our next workout which is the next step in putting together a training camp roster. I would like to thank all the players who came to the tryout and made it a competitive, spirited, and fun day of basketball!” said Mark Gaffney, Head Coach of the Pirates.
Up next, Head Coach Mark Gaffney and his staff led the basketball drills. One of the most exciting part of the whole day has always been the scrimmage stage. Players competed very hard for for nearly 90 minutes in different teams, so the Pirates staff could have even better idea to evaluate the talent on the court. Coach Gaffney and Paul Rogers (General Manager) has wrapped up the day with final speeches at the end.
General Manager Paul Rogers (on the left, Coach Gaffney on the right) said “I thought today was a really good start to the season. Had an opportunity to evaluate some talented players and allow some local guys pursue their dream of playing professional basketball. Now we have to make some hard decisions on who moves forward with us to compete for an invite to training camp.”
Pirates President/CEO, Sercan Fenerci, gave a speech about what the Pirates is all about and how this would be a great opportunity for anyone who is looking to continue their basketball careers. "We are very excited to finally kick off our second season in the ABA (American Basketball Association). All the players competed really hard during the tryout and we thank all of them for coming out. I know that Paul (Rogers-GM), and Mark (Gaffney-HC) will have their hands full this week before making their calls," said Fenerci at the end.
Pirates will hold one last "invite only" workout in September, and the selected individuals from this tryout will get an invite alongside the returning Pirates players and a few additional invitees. The date/time will be announced in the upcoming weeks and it will be an opportunity for the local media to come out and see the final stages of the selection process.
